Evidentiality is the grammatical marking of source of information (Aikhenvald 2004: 1). The Mi'gmaq evidential system consists of two clear evidentials---the direct and indirect. The direct evidential marks for information acquired firsthand; the indirect marks for information acquired through means other than the firsthand. Note that it has been argued that Mi'gmaq, an Eastern Algonquian language, has three evidentiality markers---direct, indirect, and deferential evidential markers (Inglis, 2003). However, the so-called deferential evidential is only just an allomorph of the indirect evidential.
